Piedforts are coins which have been struck on thicker than normal
blanks.  They are twice the thickness and twice the weight on the
    One Pound Silver Proof coin.
The 2001 One Pound coin, the third in a four-year series of coins representing the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom, honors Northern
Ireland.  It features on the reverse the intricate and inspirational design created by Norman Sillman, that reaches deep into the history of Northern Ireland.
A richly decorated Irish-style cross provides the background to a representation of a collar found by a ploughman in Broighter, Co. Londonderry, in 1896.
At the center of the design lies a pimpernel, a lovely yellow flower that flourishes around Lough Neagh, the great island freshwater lake to which
are linked five of Northern Ireland's six counties.
Like the previous one pound coins of Northern Ireland, this year's coin includes the edge transcription
    DECUS ET TUTAMEN
    which means
    "an ornament ad a safeguard"
The obverse carries the royal portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, FRBS, PSNAD.
